Established in 1984 Stree Aadhar Kendra (SAK) (English version Women's Development Centre) has been striving for "building a gender just society where women are not discriminated and have opportunity to realize their potential to live an empowered and violence free life" and has acted not only as a service provider but also as an advocacy organization demanding appropriate policies to end all forms of discrimination and violence against women and girl children. This has given SAK credentials as an advocacy organisation working for mainstreaming gender in a policy environment. From inception SAK has been working for bridging the gap between issues of women at grassroots and at policy making institutions through advocacy on the issues of Violence Against Women; Women's participation in decision making, Political empowerment and participation in governance processes and women's economic empowerment.
